ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT: COMMON WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP) FOR THE MUNICIPALITIES OF SKOTOUSSA AND MITROUSI, SERRES PREFECTURE

Client:  Municipality of Skotoussa – Municipality of Mitrousi
Year: 2001

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the Environmental Impact Assessment for the construction of a common WWTP for Municipalities of Skotoussa and Mitrousi.

SOLUTION
The WWTP is located 3km west of Community of Provata, near the ditch of Mpelitsa.

The majority of the communities within the aforementioned municipalities were served by septic tanks, while produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The WWTP was designed to serve a population equivalent of 22.000 (40-year period - 2041). The design of the plant was based on the following data:

The WWTP designed to treat incoming untreated wastewater adopting the treatment process of activated sludge with extended aeration, nitrification – denitrification and chlorination, comprises of the following modules and subsystems:

• influent manhole
• bar screens
• sand, grit and grease removal
• flow measurement 
• aeration tanks
• sedimentation tanks
• chlorination tank
• gravity thickener
• drying beds
• tank – effluent manhole
• buildings
• pumping stations
• instrumentation – electrical and mechanical equipment
• fencing - landscaping

In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description.
 
Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance from the construction and operation of the works was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The design of the project contributed to the maturation of actions for wastewater management in the broader region of Municipalities of Skotousa and Mitrousi.
