TECHNICAL CONSULTANT FOR THE AUDIT OF DESIGN TENDERS REGARDING THE CONTRACT “SERRES WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP)”

ISSUE
The project aimed in the technical support of the Implementation Body responsible for the effective completion of Serres WWTP. The role of the Technical Consultant included monitoring activities at each project progress phase, along with the implementation of quality assurance measures (tender audit etc)

SOLUTION                                                                                                      WWTW View
The WWTP is located 2km south of the Railway Station, adjacent to the ditch of Kamenikia and treats wastewater from the city of Serres as well as pretreated industrial wastewater from a tannery, a dairy industry and abattoirs.

Serres WWTP, which treats incoming untreated wastewater adopting the treatment process of activated sludge with extended aeration, includes the following modules and subsystems:

• primary treatment which consists of bar screens, sand removal and flow measurement
• aeration tanks
• final sedimentation tanks
• nitrification - denitrification
• disinfection
• gravity thickener
• anaerobic digestion tank
• belt sludge thickener
• pumping stations
• manhole for wastewater and sludge collection
• buildings (administration building, warehouse, substation, etc)
• fencing – landscaping – additional works

Treated effluent is discharged into the ditch of Kamenikia, which flows into the ditch of Belitsa.

BENEFIT
The project is aiming to protect and enhance the environment of the broader region of Serres Municipality, by phasing out uncontrolled urban wastewater discharges.
