ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT: WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP) FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF SERRES, SERRES PREFECTURE

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the preparation of the environmental impact assessment for the Approval of Environmental Permit regarding the construction and operation of Serres Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), treating urban wastewater from Serres Municipality as well as industrial pretreated wastewater produced by a tannery, a dairy industry and abattoirs until 2012.

The WWTP is located 2km south of the Railway Station, near the ditch of Kamenikia.
The City of Serres possesses an internal sewer network, which was constructed gradually in parallel with urban residential development.
The WWTP was designed to serve approximately 105.000 equivalent residents (40-year forecast – 2035).
Serres WWTP, which treats incoming untreated wastewater adopting the treatment process of activated sludge with the extended aeration, includes the following modules and subsystems:

• primary treatment which consists of bar screens, sand removal and flow measurement
• aeration tanks
• final sedimentation tanks
• nitrification - denitrification
• disinfection
• gravity thickener
• anaerobic digestion tank
• belt sludge thickener
• pumping stations
• manhole for wastewater and sludge collection
• buildings (administration building, warehouse, substation, etc)
• fencing – landscaping – additional works

Treated effluent is discharged into the ditch of Kamenikia, which flows into the ditch of Belitsa.

In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description. Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance from the construction and operation of the works was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The project was submitted to the public agency responsible for the Approval of Environmental Permit. The construction of the project resolved urban wastewater management issues within the Municipality of Serres
