Project Summary

Wastewater Management
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF ARKALOCHORI MUNICIPALITY WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP), IRAKLIO PREFECTURE

Client:  Municipality of Arkalochori
Time: 2001

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the Approval of Environmental Permit for the construction of a WWTP for the Municipality of Arkalochori within the Prefecture of Iraklio.

SOLUTION
The WWTP is located 1.5 km west of Community of Arkalochori, and occupies an area of 1 hectare.

The communities within Arkalochori Municipality were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The WWTP of Arkalochori Municipality was designed to serve a population equivalent of 7.500 (40-year period - 2041), based on the following data:

Parameter Measurement UnitValue
Population persons 7.500
Average Flow m3/d1.840
Peak Flow m3/h220

The WWTP was designed to treat incoming untreated wastewater adopting the treatment process of activated sludge with extended aeration and includes the following modules and subsystems:Δ.Σ.Α

In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description.

Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance from the construction and operation of the works was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The project was submitted to the public agency responsible for the Approval of Environmental Permit. The construction of the project is expected to resolve the issue of urban wastewater treatment and disposal.
