PROJECT PURPOSE

The purpose of the project was the design - preliminary and final design (civil works & e/m equipment) - of the sewerage network for the town of Nea Aghialos and the pressure main sewer and necessary pumping stations for directing the collected wastewater to the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Volos.

KEY INFORMATION

The town of Nea Aghialos was previously served by septic tanks. Substantial volumes of produced wastewaters were discharged untreated in the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents. In addition, the proximity of the town of Nea Aghialos to the coastline of Pagasitikos Bay underpins the necessity of the project in the context of bathing waters protection.

The design of the project was in line with the Greek and European Code of Practice and relevant legislation/specifications. In this respect, design and sizing of sewage collection systems considered population served, commercial and industrial flows and flow peaking characteristics. The design period for the pipelines and the pumping stations was 40-years (population 15.000), while the selection of the necessary electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year design period (population 10.000). More specifically, the project included:

RESULT
The design of the above works was in line with the requirements of Greek and European Legislation, as well as the requirements for absorbing the EU funds for the construction of the aforementioned works, resulting in the resolution of the wastewater management problem and the protection of water bodies in the region of N. Aghialos in the Municipality of Volos.
