PROJECT PURPOSE

The purpose of the project was the final design of:

(a) sewerage networks for the communities of Karteros, Vatheianos Kabos, Chani Kokkini and Gournes in the Municipality of Hersonissos,

(b) pressure main sewer lines along with the necessary pumping stations for directing the collected wastewaters to the Municipality's WWTP,

(c) WWTP based on the activated sludge process. The aforementioned communities were previously served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region, this resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

KEY INFORMATION

The design of the project was in line with the Greek and European Code of Practice. In this respect, design and sizing of sewage collection systems considered population served, commercial and industrial flows and flow peaking characteristics. Design period for the pipelines and the pumping stations, was 40-years (population 13.906), while the selection of the necessary electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year design period (population 9.422). More specifically, the project included:

• Final design of vacuum sewer network (with a total length of ~4km) and gravity sewer network (with a total length of ~24km) for the community of Gournes; gravity sewer network (with a total length of ~4km and pipeline diameter 200mm) for the community of Karteros; vacuum sewer network (with a total length of ~2km) and gravity sewer network (with a total length of ~22,5km) for the communities of Vatheianos Kabos, Chani Kokkini.
• Final design of pressure main pipeline (140mm, ~5km; 315mm, ~4km; 315mm, ~1km) and 3 pumping stations for the communities of Karteros, Vatheianos Kabos and Chani Kokkini; final design of pressure main pipeline (200mm, ~3km; 200mm, ~3km;) and 2 pumping station for the community of Gournes.
• Design of a WWTP [design population equivalent (PE) for 20 years horizon: 6.550 residents] adopting extended aeration treatment method. Treated effluent was discharged in a nearby stream located 300m far from the WWTP which flows into Cretan Sea. Reuse of effluents was also studied. The WWTP was designed according the MBR Mode.
• Environmental Impact Assessment.
• Bill of Quantities.
• Completion of tender dossiers for the works in accordance with European (EU directives 2004/18 and 2004/17) and Greek legislation (Law 3669/2008).
• Construction Safety Plan.

RESULT
The design of the above works was in line with the requirements of Greek and European Legislation, as well as the requirements for absorbing the EU funds for the construction of the aforementioned works, resulting in the resolution of the wastewater management problem and the protection of water bodies in the region of Karteros, Vathianos Kampos - Chani Kokkini and Gournes.
