PROJECT TITLE: WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT DESIGN FOR THE MUNICIPAL DISTRICTS OF KANDILA, MYTIKA AND VΑRΝΑΚΑ, IN MUNICIPALITY OF ALYZIA, AITOLOAKARNANIA PREFECTURE

Client: Municipality of Xiromero, Greece
Date of award: 2010 (the project is under execution)

Construction cost: 7.725.000€

Origin of Fund: EU Cohesion Fund - Municipality of Xiromero

PROJECT PURPOSE

The purpose of the project was the design of:

(a) the sewerage network for the settlements of Varnakas, Mytikas and Kandila,

(b) the main collector of wastewater to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and

(c) the WWTP based on the activated sludge process.

The aforementioned communities were previously served by septic tanks. Up to now, the produced wastewater was discharged untreated within the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

KEY INFORMATION

The design of the sewer networks, the pipelines, the pumping stations and the WWTP, was based on a 40-year horizon (population 8.031), while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon (population 5.773). Specifically, the project included:

- Final design of the gravity pipeline network for municipal districts of Varnakas and Kandila.

-Design of a vacuum sewer network for the municipal district of Mytikas, of a vacuum pumping station and the required force main pipeline used for the coneyance of wastewater from the municipal district of Mytikas to the main pumping station.

-Final design of force main pipelines of all the districts and of two (2) pumping stations used for pumping wastewater to the new WWTP.

-Design of Municipality's WWTP adopting extended aeration treatment method. Treated effluents are discharged through a pipeline and from there via an undersea pipeline to the west of Cape Kamilafia.

-Environmental Impact Assessment for the construction and operation of the aforementioned works.

-Bill of Quantities.

-Completion of tender dossiers for the works in accordance with Greek legislation (Law 3669/2008), which is complied with European legislation (EU directives 2004/18 and 2004/17).

-Construction - Safety Plan.

RESULT
The design of the above works was in line with the requirements of Greek and European Legislation, as well as the requirements for absorbing the EU funds for the construction of the aforementioned works, resulting in the resolution of the wastewater management problem and the protection of water bodies in the settlements of Mytikas, Varnakas and Kandila in the Municipality of Xiromero.
