Project Summary

Wastewater Management
DESIGN OF WASTEWATER SYSTEM OF MUNICIPALITY OF ERETRIA

PROJECT TITLE: DESIGN OF WASTEWATER SYSTEM OF MUNICIPALITY OF ERETRIA

Client: Municipality of Halkida - Municipal Water Wastewater Utility of Eretria, Greece
Dates: 2012 - 2013

Construction cost: 16.657.000€

Origin of Fund: EU Cohesion Fund - Municipal Water Wastewater Utility of Eretria

PROJECT PURPOSE

The purpose of the project was the design of:

(a) the sewerage network for the town of Eretria,

(b) the main collector of wastewater to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and

(c) the WWTP based on the activated sludge process, with simultaneous stabilization of produced sewage sludge and biological nitrogen removal.

Eretria was previously served by septic tanks. Up to now, the produced wastewater was discharged untreated within the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

KEY INFORMATION

The design of the sewerage network, the pipelines, the pumping stations and the WWTP, was based on a 40-year horizon (population 17.548), while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon (population 12.674). Specifically, the project included:

- Design of a vacuum sewerage network for the town of Eretria and design of two vacuum stations.

- Design of force main pipelines of the town of Eretria and of three (3) pumping stations used for pumping wastewater to the new WWTP.

- Design of Municipality's WWTP adopting extended aeration treatment method, with simultaneous stabilization of produced sewage sludge and biological nitrogen removal. Treated effluents are discharged through a pipeline and from there via an undersea pipeline to the sea area "Amarinthos Bay ".

- Environmental Impact Assessment for the construction and operation of the aforementioned works.

- Bill of Quantities.

- Completion of tender dossiers for the works in accordance with Greek legislation (Law 3669/2008), which is complied with European legislation (EU directives 2004/18 and 2004/17).

RESULT
The design of the above works was in line with the requirements of Greek and European Legislation, as well as the requirements for absorbing the EU funds for the construction of the aforementioned works, resulting in the resolution of the wastewater management problem and the protection of water bodies in the agglomeration of Eretria in the Municipality of Eretria.
