ISSUE
The purpose of the project was:

• the final design of the force main and gravity sewer pipelines and pumping stations for transporting the collected wastewater of communities Agios Loukas, Akrolimni, Esovalta and Stavrodromi to Municipality’s new WWTP
• the preliminary design of the Municipality’s new WWTP within an area of 2.8 hectares located 1.5km southeast of community of Agios Loukas
  

SOLUTION
The collected wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The table below shows the total peak population of all communities, for each design phase.

The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines, the pumping stations and the WWTP, was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:

• gravity pipeline network (total length: 660m and pipeline diameters from 315mm to 400mm) and force main pipeline network (total length:16.300m and pipeline diameters of 140mm, 160mm, 200mm, and 280mm; four (4) pumping stations were used for pumping the wastewater
• WWTP which treats the incoming wastewater using the activated sludge process with the extended aeration modification method [design population equivalent (PE) for 20 years: 7500 residents]; intermediate disposal of the treated wastewater in the ditch of Lipochori located 186m from the WWTP and final disposal in the river Loudias which falls into Thermaikos bay
