WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT DESIGN FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF KERAMOTI, KAVALA PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Keramoti
Year: 2008
Budget: 7.450.000 €
ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the
preliminary design of the:
- sewer pipeline network of the communities of Keramoti and Chaidefto
- force main sewer pipelines and pumping stations for transporting the collected wastewater of Keramoti and Chaidefto to the Municipality’s new Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP)
- new WWTP of the Municipality of Keramoti, within an area of 2 hectares located 1km north of the community of Chaidefto
SOLUTION
The aforementioned communities were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.
The table below shows the total peak population of all communities, for each design phase.
Peak Population of Served Communities |
COMMUNITY
| POPULATION (2001)
| WINTER POPULATION
| SUMMER POPULATION |
8-YEAR POPULATION (2009) | 20-YEAR POPULATION (2029) | 40- YEAR POPULATION (2049)
| PEAK POPULATION (2009) | 20-YEAR POPULATION (2029) | YEAR POPULATION (2049)
|
Keramoti | 1.228 | 1.364 | 1.773 | 2.455 | 2.678 | 3.482 | 4.820 |
Chaidefto | 475 | 475 | 618 | 855 | 475 | 618 | 855 |
TOTAL | 1.703 | 1.839 | 2.391 | 3.310 | 3.153 | 4.100 | 5.675 |
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines, the pumping stations and the WWTP, was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
- vacuum sewer network for the communities of Keramoti (with a total length of 15.620m and pipeline diameters from 110mm to 200mm) and Chaidefto (with a total length of 13.600m and pipeline diameters from 110mm to 200mm)
- twin force main pipeline network (with a total length of 4.770m and pipeline diameters of 2x140mm) - only one is operational during winter, and both operate simultaneously during the summer; two (2) pumping stations were used for pumping the wastewater
- WWTP which treats incoming wastewater using the activated sludge process with the extended modification method (design population equivalent (PE) 20 years: 4.100 residents); the treated effluent wastewater is discharged through a pipeline with a total length of 2.700m to the drainage ditch T3
In summary, the WWTP consists of the following units:
- influent manhole
- chlorination tank
- bar screens
- gravity thickener
- sand and grit removal
- mechanical sludge dewatering
- selector tank
- post aeration tank
- splitter box
- buildings
- aeration tanks
- pumping stations
- sedimentation tanks
- instrumentation, mechanical & electrical equipment
- flow measurement
- fencing - landscaping
BENEFIT
The design of the sewer pipelines and the WWTP solved the wastewater problem for the communities of
Keramoti and Chaidefto of the Municipality of Keramoti.
