ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the 
preliminary design of the internal sewer pipeline network for communities of Skoutari and Kato Kamila of Municipality of Iraklia as well as the final design of the external force main sewer pipelines and pumping stations for transporting the collected wastewater to Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Serres, located 3.5km north of community of Skoutari.
SOLUTION
The aforementioned communities were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines and the pumping stations was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
- internal vacuum sewer network for communities of Skoutari (total length of 21.405m and pipeline diameters from 90mm to 160mm) and Kato Kamila (total length of 23.080m and pipeline diameters from 90mm to 160mm)
- external force main pipeline network (total length: 9.390m, and pipeline diameter of 140mm and 180mm)
- pumping stations to meet the operational requirements of the system. Specifically, two (2) vacuum stations were designed for the operation of the internal sewer networks of communities, which alternatively can serve as force main pumping stations in the external pipeline network, and two (2) conventional intermediate force main pumping stations
BENEFIT
The design of the sewer pipelines solved the wastewater problem for communities of Skoutari and Kato Kamila of Municipality of Skoutari.
