ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the internal sewer networks of East and West sector of Municipal District of Alexandria, which administratively belongs to the homonymous Municipality and is situated east of Prefecture of Imathia in the limits of Prefecture of Thessaloniki. The project submitted with the design-built procedure for the selection of the contractor.
SOLUTION
The municipal districts of Alexandria were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.
The table below shows the total peak population of all communities, for each design phase.
Peak Population of Served Communities | ||||
Community | Population 2001 | Projected Population in 2005 | Projected Population in 20 years | Projected Population in 40 years |
East Sector | 3.900 | 4.700 | 6.900 | 3.900 |
North Sector | 2.000 | 2.400 | 3.500 | 2.000 |
TOTAL | 5.900 | 7.100 | 10.400 | 5.900 |
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines and the pumping stations was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
In each sector, wastewater is collected in the corresponding pumping station and vacuum station, and afterwards it is pumped to the Waste Water Treatment Plant of Alexandria, which is located 450m northwest of the Municipal District limits.
BENEFIT
The design of the aforementioned works solved the problem of wastewater management of East and North Sector of Municipal District of Alexandria.
