ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the:

• internal sewer pipeline network for communities of Iraklia, Valtero, Dasochori, Psomotopi, Karperi, Kimisi, Lithotopos, Limnochori, Pontismeno, Chrisochorafa and Simona of Municipality of Iraklia
  
• external force main sewer pipelines and pumping stations for transporting the collected wastewater of the aforementioned communities to Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) of Iraklia – Sidirokastro – Skotousa, located in the eastern section of Valtero and northwest of Gefiroudi

SOLUTION
The aforementioned communities were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The table below shows the total peak population of all communities, for each design phase.

The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines, the pumping stations and the WWTP was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:

• internal vacuum sewer network for communities of Iraklia, Valtero, Dasochori, Psomotopi, Karperi, Kimisi, Limnochori, Pontismeno, Chrisochorafa and Simona (total length of 159.000m and pipeline diameters from 90mm to 250mm) and gravity sewer network for community of Lithotopos (total length of 11.000m and pipeline diameters from 200mm to 250mm); vacuum pumping stations were used in the vacuum sewer networks for collecting the wastewater
• force main pipeline network (total length: 37.300m, and pipeline diameter from 90mm to 355mm); sixteen (16) pumping stations were used for pumping the water
