PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT (WWTP) FOR MUNICIPALITY OF SKOTOUSA, SERRES PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Skotousa
Year: 2001
Budget: 400.000.000€ (prices 2000)
ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the preliminary design of the new WWTP of Municipality of Skotousa for a 40 year period with served population of 11.750 residents.
SOLUTION
The WWTP was proposed to be constructed in a field covering 0.6 hectares, located 2km northwest of Municipal District of Skotousa near the ditch of Mpelitsa. The WWTP would cover the needs for wastewater treatment for all communities of Municipality of Skotousa as well as the communities of Vamvakia, Anagenisi and Karperi..
The WWTP was designed to serve a population equivalent of 11.750 or 340m³/d of wastewater. The design of the plant was based on the following data:
Parameter | Measurement Unit | 1991
| 2031 |
Population
| persons | 7.900 | 11.750 |
Average Flow | m3/d | 1.420 | 2.115 |
Peak Flow | m3/h | 238 | 340 |
The WWTP was designed to treat incoming

untreated wastewater using the activated sludge process with extended aeration modification, and includes the following modules and subsystems:
- influent manhole
- bar screens
- sand, grit and grease removal
- flow measurement
- aeration tanks
- sedimentation tanks
- chlorination tank
- gravity thickener
- drying beds
- tank – effluent manhole
- buildings
- pumping stations
- instrumentation – electrical and mechanical equipment
- fencing - landscaping
The treated wastewater is discharged through a distribution pipeline into the ditch of Mpelitsa.
BENEFITThe design of the aforementioned works solved the problem of wastewater management for communities of Municipality of Skotousa as well as the Communities of Vamvakia, Anagenisi and Karperi.
