RECORDING OF EXISTING SITUATION – INVESTIGATION OF POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS REGARDING THE SEWER NETWORK FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF SKOTOUSA, SERRES PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Skotousa
Year: 2001
Budget: 5.641.000€ (value in 2000)
ISSUE
The purpose of the project was to record the existing situation and investigate potential solutions regarding wastewater management within the Municipality of Skotousa.
SOLUTION
The communities within Municipality of Skotousa were served by septic tanks. Produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.
The table below shows the total peak population of the community, for each design phase.
Peak Population of Served Communities |
Community | Population 1991 | Projected Population in 20 years | Projected Population in 40 years |
Ammoudia | 1.145 | 1.397 | 1.705 |
Gefiroudi | 793 | 968 | 1.181 |
Melenikitsi | 645 | 787 | 960 |
Nea Tiroloi | 664 | 810 | 989 |
Paleokastro | 621 | 758 | 925 |
Skotousa | 1.619 | 1.975 | 2.410 |
TOTAL | 5.487 | 6.695 | 8.170 |
For adequate wastewater management within the Municipality of Skotousa, a list of alternative solutions was proposed:
- Solution A: The first and dominant solution included the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plan (WWTP) adopting the prolonged aeration method, which would serve the Municipal Districts of Skotousa, Nea Tiroloi, Gefiroudi, Ammoudia, Melinikitsi (Municipality of Skotousa), Karperi, Anagenisi (Municipality of Irakleia) and Vamvakia (Municipality of K.Mitrousis. It was considered more appropriate that the Municipal District of Paleokastro would join the system of Municipality of Sidirokastro. The facility’s location was proposed near the ditch of Mpelitsa at a distance of 3.700m south of Skotousa.
- Solution Α1: Given the proximity of the Municipal District of Kala Dendra with the Municipality of Lefkona to the proposed WWTP, it was suggested that its wastewater was also transferred to the proposed facilities.
- Solution Α2: Specifically for the Municipal District of Melenikitsi, which is located far from the rest, the wastewater treatment method of artificial wetlands was proposed.
- Solution Β: The second proposal considered the location of the WWTP to the north, near Mpelitsa at a distance of approximately 1.300m northwest of Skotousa
- Solution C: Another solution presented was the collaboration of Municipality of Skotousa with the Municipality of K.Mitrousis to a common facility which would be situated within the municipal limits of Skotousa. The total served population by this plant would be close to 20.000 residents (projected population in 2031)
For the implementation of the above systems, the construction of separate sewerage networks in all Municipal Districts was highlighted.
BENEFIT
The design of the project resolved the problem of wastewater management for all communities within the Municipality of Skotousa.
