SEWARAGE AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT DESIGN FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF SIDIROKASTRO, SERRES PREFECTURE

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the:
internal sewer pipeline network of the communities of Thermopigi, Ampela, Vamvakofyto, Kamaroto, Sidirokastro, Strymonochori, Charopo and Chortero in Sidirokastro Municipality.
force main and gravity sewer pipelines and pumping stations carrying collected wastewater from the aforementioned communities to the Municipality’s Waste Water Treatment Plant
new Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in an area of 0.6 hectares in the Municipality’s west sector.
SOLUTION
The aforementioned communities were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents. The design was prepared in accordance with the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines, the pumping stations and the WWTP was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. More specifically, the project included:
internal gravity sewer network for the communities of Sidirokastro (with a total length of 112.380m and pipeline diameters ranging from 200mm to 400mm). It is noted that for adequate wastewater collection from the communities of Kato Ampela and Strimonochori, additional force main pipelines were designed (with a total length of 1.600m and pipeline diameters ranging from 63mm to 110mm), while two (2) internal pumping stations were implemented
external gravity pipeline network (with a total length of 12.700m and pipeline diameters ranging from 200mm to 800mm), and external force main pipeline network (with a total length of 11.100m and pipeline diameters ranging from 140mm to 500mm), as well as five (5) pumping stations
WWTP which treats incoming wastewater adopting the treatment process of activated sludge with extended aeration. In summary, the facility consists of the following units:
- inlet manhole
- gravity thickener
- bar screens
- mechanichal sludge dewatering
- leachate manhole
- sand and grit removal
- bypassing pipelines
- splitter box
- aeration tanks
- buildings
- sedimentation tanks
infrastructure works (water supply networks, stormwater and wastewater networks, roads, landscaping)
sludge recirculation
- other installations (exterior lighting, telephone installation, auxiliary equipment)
- chlorination tank
BENEFIT
The design of the aforementioned works resolved the problem of wastewater management within all communities of the Municipality of Sidirokastro.
