ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the recording of the existing water and wastewater infrastructure and the design of required future infrastructure.

The communities within the aforementioned Municipality had water distribution networks which however due to their prolonged lifetime and construction material (asbestos and steel pipelines), became inadequate and did not ensure accepted quality for potable water.

Furthermore, all communities were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The design of the project was completed in accordance with the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of pipelines and required pumping stations was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. More specifically, the project included:

• replacement of the asbestos water distribution pipelines
• internal sewerage networks
• gravity sewer pipeline network (overall length 15.100m and pipeline diameters  ranging between 200mm - 400mm), force main pipelines (total length 7.200m and pipeline diameters ranging between 160mm - 200mm) and three (3) pumping stations used for pumping wastewater
• wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), comprising of primary treatment (screening, sand and grit removal, and primary sedimentation) and secondary treatment (aeration tank and secondary sedimentation tank); treated water effluent discharges into Strymona river which flows through the Municipality of Visaltia 

BENEFIT
The design of the aforementioned works resolved the problem of water supply and sewage disposal for the communities in the Municipality of Visaltia.
