Project Summary

Wastewater Management
INVESTIGATION OF POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS FOR THE WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT PLANT IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF KAPETAN MITROUSIS, SERRES PREFECTURE (PROVATAS, MONOKLISIA, ANO KAMILA, ANO & KATO MITROUSI)

Client:   Municipality of Kapetan Mitrousis
Year:     1999
Budget: 4.706.000€ (value in 2000)

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the recording of the existing situation and the investigation of potential solutions for wastewater management in the Municipality of Kapetan Mitrousis.

SOLUTION
The communities of the Municipality of Kapetan Mitrousis were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.

The table below shows total peak population for each community through every design phase.

Peak Population of Served Communities
Community Population 1991 Projected Population in 20 yearsProjected Population in 40 years
Provatas 664 810989
Monoklisia 645787960
Ano Kamila 1.1451.3971.705
Mitrousis 7939681.181
TOTAL 3.2473.9624.835

The internal sewage collection network for the aforementioned communities, was proposed to be constructed based on the gravity sewerage method, while wastewater gravity and force main pipelines were introduced.

Treatment of collected wastewater involved the construction of a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) adopting the treatment process of activated sludge with extended aeration, located adjacent to Mpelitsa ditch, where treated effluent is discharged.

BENEFIT
The implemented proposals resolved the issue of wastewater management within the communities of Kapetan Mitrousis Municipality.
