ISSUE
The purpose of the study was to draft an environmental impact study for the Environmental Terms approval stage, regarding the construction and operation of the irrigation system in the area of Lithino within Ioannina Prefecture.

The irrigational needs of the local cultivations are covered by bored water wells, resulting in overexploitation of aquifers and their gradual depletion.
The irrigated area covers 140 hectares.

Briefly the proposed works included:

• Abstraction works, namely construction of abstraction dam (height 4m, width 24m), stilling pond (measuring 10 x 15m) and the water supply well (measuring 2 x 1m and 3m high).
• Irrigation works, namely construction of an adductor canal (1.220m in length), primary, secondary and tertiary canals of total length 15.850m.
• Drainage works, along with the construction of drainage ditches 7km in length.
• Rural road works, involving the construction of rural roads along the canals with a total length of 15km.

In the irrigated area land consolidation was scheduled to accumulate compound property.

In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description.

Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance from the construction and operation of the works was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the department responsible for environmental licensing of the proposed works contributing to the resolution of irrigation related problems in the area of Lithino in Ioannina Prefecture.
