Project Summary

Drinking Water-Irrigation
ENVIRONMENTAL LOCATION AND IMPACT STUDY REGARDING WATER BORES AT THE SITE MILOS DIMITRITSIOU, SERRES PREFECTURE

Client:  Dimitritsiou Community in Serres Prefecture
Year:  1996

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was to ensure preapproval of the proposed location and approval of the Environmental Terms for the construction of irrigation system and water bores in the site Milos located in Dimitrtitsi community of Serres Prefecture.

 SOLUTION                                                                                                                             Dimitritsio communityΥΔΡΕΥΣΗ
The project aims to improve the present conditions of cultivations irrigation in the cultivated area of Dimitritsio community.

 The proposed works include:

The technical characteristics of the project are as follows:
An appropriate sensor is installed in the tank constantly measuring the available freeboard. At the vicinity of the tank a pumping station is constructed where three (3) identical pumps in parallel are installed, with input from the tank and exit to a common manifold.
Immediately after the pumps and prior to the transfer pipelines a self-cleansing filter is installed with a maximum capacity 150m3/h of solids retention with diameter D> 500μm and the ability to self-clean with suction arrangements. For ON-OFF control of each branch hydraulic valves are implemented that are able to receive electrical command.

In addition a turbine type flow meter is installed following the filter and prior to any transportation branch, along with pressure sensors ranging between 0-10bar located in the common manifold at the pressure pumps outlet.
The central pipelines follow the direction of local roads and are installed below ground level.

Furthermore the installation of secondary pipelines is included for the transportation of water from the main pipeline to the abstraction of each producer. These pipelines are also set below ground level.
At each water abstraction location, a hydraulic valve is positioned of nominal capacity 10m3/h with adjustable pressure output at 4bar regardless of the pressure input and built-in water meter with pulse output for volumetric control.

In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description.
Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance from the construction and operation of the works was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the department responsible for environmental licensing of the proposed works contributing to the resolution of irrigation related problems in the area of Dimitritsiou community.
