Project Summary

Drinking Water-Irrigation
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDY REGARDING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A RURAL ROAD AND THE ISTALLATION OF A WATER PIPE FROM THE WATER ABSTRACTION LOCATION (DAM) TO THE STORAGE TANK IN AGIO PNEUMA COMMUNITY, SERRES PREFECTURE

Client:  Agio Pneuma community in Serres Prefecture
Year:  1997

ISSUE
The purpose of the study was to draft an environmental impact study for the Environmental Terms approval stage, regarding the construction of a new road along the supply pipe from Makrilakkos dam to the water storage tank within Agio Pneuma community in Serres Prefecture, as well as the installation of a new water transfer pipe from the dam to the water tank.

SOLUTION                                                                                Agio Pneuma community in Serres Prefecture
ΥΔΡΕΥΣΗIt is noted that the irrigational needs of Agio Pneuma community were covered by bored water wells. However, numerous problems related to water adequacy, available water quantities and the depletion of aquifers demonstrated the need to search for alternatives, indicating the construction of a small water reservoir at the site Makrilakkos, 15km northeast of the aforementioned community.
The road connection between the village and the reservoir is achieved via an old dirt road, crossing the ruins of Dranova settlement. The existing water pipeline ends at Dranova, hence the installation of a pipeline up to the formed reservoir was necessary. In order for the required pipeline to be installed a new rural road was designed, facilitating easier access to the reservoir, as the current path through Dranova is greater in length and poses altered geometrical characteristics due to antiqueness.
The road design of 5 +717,5km in total length initiates from the water abstraction output of the dam and follows a downward course till point K96 at 4 +951km and a southwards direction along the stream flow. From point K96 to the end it follows upward course until it meets with the existing road at the ruins of Dranova.
The road design implemented the technical specifications for road class C. The maximum longitudinal gradient of the road is 8.3% and the lowest 1.27%. The width reaches 4,0m with appropriate widenings in certain sections to facilitate the vehicles crossings. The removed material slopes range from 1:1 for earthy – semi rocky materials up to 10:1 for the rocky sections of the road, while imported material slopes range from 2:3 for earthy – semi rocky materials up 2.5:3 for the rocky sections of the road.
With respect to the pipeline, it follows the course of the designed road directed from the dam to the community on the right road slope. Along the pipeline, and at points 1+062.50km, 2+191.00Km and 3+400.50 pressure relief wells were constructed. Moreover at point 4+951.00km a cleaning chamber was constructed. From that point till the location of the existing pipeline at Dranova ruins the pipeline runs an upward course.

The design of the proposed works finally resolved issues related to the supply of potable water from Makrilakkos dam to Ag. Pneumatos community and the safe access to these points.
In the accounted study the exact locations of the construction works were identified while the current situation was analyzed, investigating the state of the natural and human environment. At the same time significant information was offered with respect to the feasibility of the works along with their analytical description.
Finally, the extent and size of the caused environmental annoyance through construction and operation phase was described, while appropriate methods to treat environmental impacts during construction and operation phase were provided.

BENEFIT
The study was submitted to the department responsible for environmental licensing of the proposed works contributing to the resolution of potable water supply related problems from Makrilakkos dam to Agio Pneuma community.
