ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY FOR THE PROJECT: "CONSTRUCTION OF A WATER SUPPLY NETWORK AND WATER TANK RESERVOIRS IN THE THIRASIA REGION", ISLAND OF SANTORINI, PREFECTURE OF CYCLADES

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment and approval of the environmental terms of an aqueduct and a water distribution network for the community Manolas, Thirasia region. 

SOLUTION

Manolas community does not have a water distribution network and there is also a lack of water reservoirs for water storage. The inhabitants of Manolas were able to provide water for themselves from domestic rainfall collectors, lying on the roofs of their homes. In addition, water was transported to the village by ship from the main town of Thira. The main problem was the lack of a water storage tank and a water transmission pipe.

The following works were proposed:

• Two water tanks of capacity 1000m3 and 300m3 with dimensions 24x11m and 3x13m respectively; water tanks were constructed from reinforced concrete with circular and rectangular section respectively
• Construction of pipelines for feeding the water tanks with a total length of 4.500m and diameters of Φ100mm and Φ250mm
• Water distribution pipes with a total length of 1.100m, diameters of Φ63mm made of galvanized iron

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

BENEFIT
This project was submitted to the environmental public authority for the approval of the environmental terms of the proposed works and contributed to the resolution of the water supply problem for the Community of Manolas.
