Drinking Water-Irrigation
STUDY FOR THE ENVIRONMENTAL UPGRADE OF THE RIVER VOSVOZIS (FROM MITRIKOU LAKE TO REGION OF KOMOTINI), PREFECTURE OF KOMOTINI

Client: Municipal Enterprise for Water Supply and Sewerage of Komotini
Year: 2000

ISSUE

The purpose of the study is the environmental licensing of the required works for solving the hydraulic problems in the river Vosvosis (e.g. the increased sediment flow) and the planned architectural interventions for environmental enhancement of the region.

SOLUTION
Section ΥΔΡΕΥΣΗof the grid of branches
In the first part of the study, for solving the hydraulic problems in the river, the following works were proposed:

In the second part of the study, the construction of a recreation park is planned along the riverside area of river Vosvosis, west from town Komotini and just above of the northern edge of the community Ifaistos which includes the creation of a lake reservoir, zoo and botanical garden, construction of an amphitheatre, wildlife care centre and summer theatre, sports area and wooden bridges for connecting the various sites within the recreation area.

In order to serve the visitors, two cafeterias will be constructed one of each side of the river, three new stands and nine kiosks, 110 tables and chairs, 240 benches and 40 stone fountains. Also, 4 playgrounds are planned for the recreation of children while140 lighting bolds will be installed in the whole area. Finally, 250 wooden bins will be placed in suitable positions to keep the site clean.

For the visitors safety, a wooden fence will be built from tree trunks with a height of 0,90m and a total length of 4,620m on the border of the river around the lake reservoir and at points were the elevation difference from the water surface is too high.

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT

The study contributed to the environmental enhancement of river Vosvosis.
