COMPLEMENTARY WORKS FOR THE PROJECT: "CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF RECLAMATION AND IRRIGATION WORKS IN THE PLAIN OF RIVER MORNOS", PREFECTURES OF AITOLOAKARNANIA AND FOKIDA AND RENEWAL OF THE APPROVED ENVIRONMENTAL TERMS OF THE PROJECT

Client: Ministry of Rural Development & Food
Year: 2006

ISSUE

The purpose of the project was the renewal and modification of the environmental terms concerning the reclamation and irrigation works in the plain of river Mornos.

SOLUTION                                                                                      General view of the projectΥΔΡΕΥΣΗ

The irrigation works have been existed for many years. The construction works of the overflow weir of the water supply in the river of Mornos and the conveyance conduit of the irrigation network which began in 1989 have been already completed. Moreover, the construction of the piping network in the eastern zone has been completed.

Briefly, the works included:

1. Water intake works transversal to the riverbed of Mornos.
2. Steel abductor pipe that carries water from the river to water tank Δ3 with a length of 5,5km.
3. Water tank Δ3 with capacity of 32.500m3.
4. Underground irrigation network which supplies a surface of 5.500m2 hectares, in the south region of the villages Malamati, Agios Polikarpos, Managouli.
5. Water purification works at the region of redistributed land at the region from the western part of the zone (south of the village Malamati).
6. Underground water transmission pipe from water tank Δ3 and wells M1, M2, M3, Γ5, Γ9 to the water tank Δ 1.2.
7. Water tank Δ 1.2.
8. Pumping station for the water springs of Apolokosta and the expansion of the pumping station of D1 for the water springs of Maltasouda.
9. Networks of open channels for redistributed land (9000 hectares surface) with a length of 55-60 km.
10. Sewerage and drainage networks for the entire region.
11. Roadway construction and access to the parcels.
12. Pumping stations for the drainage networks.
13. Works of land redistribution.
14. Underground piping made of PVC at the region of Kefalas (300 hectares).

It must be noted that the first five (5) works had been constructed prior to this study.

In the current study, the exact location for the construction of the works was identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Then, a reference was made to the suggested works before and after the final design, the works that had been already constructed, those under construction and lastly an analysis of the required works was made. Finally, the environmental impact assessments were presented along with the mediating actions during the construction and operation of the works.

BENEFIT

The study was submitted to the responsible public authority for the approval of the renewed-modified environmental terms of the project.
