UPDATE OF SEWERAGE AND WATER SUPPLY FINAL DESIGN FOR ARKALOCHORI, IRAKLEIO PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Arkalochori
Year: 2001
Budget: 25.050.000€ (prices 2002)
ISSUEThe purpose of the project was the

update of the sewer pipelines final design, the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) and the internal water supply networks of City of Arkalochori.
SOLUTION The community of Arkalochori had a water supply network, which due to its age and construction material (steel and asbestos pipelines) could not ensure the adequacy and the good quality of drinking water. Furthermore, the community was served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.
The table below shows the total peak population of the community, for each design phase.
Peak Population of Served Communities |
Community | Population 2001 | Projected Population in 20 years
| Projected Population in 40 years |
Arkalochori | 3.100 | 4.606 | 6.845 |
TOTAL | 3.100 | 4.606 | 6.845 |
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines and the pumping stations was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
- internal gravity sewer network of Community of Arkalochori (total length of 63.400m and diameters from 200mm to 400mm)
- external force main pipeline network with total length of 2.030m and diameters from 250mm to 500mm; two (2) pumping stations were designed for pumping the wastewater
- WWTP for treating incoming wastewater with the extended aeration method. The WWTP covers an area of 1 hectare and is located 1.5km southeast of the community. The treated effluent wastewater through a pumping station irrigates an area of 7.2 hectares. In summary, the WWTP consists of the following units:
- septage treatment unit
- influent manhole
- bypass pipeline
- bar screens
- influent pumping station
- sand, grit and grit removal
- flow measurement
- aeration splitter box
- selector tanks
- aeration and denitrification tanks
- sedimentation splitter box
- secondary sedimentation tanks.
- sludge recirculation and waste pumping station
- mixed liquid recirculating pumping station
- filtration
- chlorinationη
- treated wastewater storage tank
- treated wastewater disposal pumping station
- final disposal pipeline
- gravity thickener and sludge dewatering
- administration building and other auxiliary buildings (influent works building, energy building, sludge treatment building and chlorination building)
- internal water supply network of Arkalochori (with total length of 64.400m and pipeline diameters from 75mm to 110mm)
- external piezometric pipeline network for distributing drinking water with total length of 4.700m and pipeline diameters from 75mm to 250mm
- new tank with capacity of 300m³ which was built alongside the existing tanks
BENEFITThe design of the project solved the problems of water supply and wastewater management for the community of Arkalochori.
