FINAL DESIGN OF THE EXTERIOR SEWERAGE PIPELINES IN MUNICIPALITY OF VERIA AND REPLACEMENT OF THE EXTERIOR WATER SUPPLY NETWORK FOR THE MUNICIPAL DISTRICTS OF KATO VERMIO, ASOMATOI AND AGIA VARVARA IN MUNICIPALITY OF VERIA, IMATHIA PREFECTURE
Client: Municipal Water Wastewater Utility of Veria
Year: 2008
Budget: 3.586.000€ (sewage) & 2.142.000€ (water supply)
ISSUE
The purpose of the project was:
1. The final design

of the external sewerage pipelines and pumping stations necessary to transport wastewater from the Municipal Districts of Rachi, Asomata, Agia Varvara, Ammos, Mesi, Georgiani, Tripotamos and Komninio, as well as the communities of Panorama and Lazochori of the Municipality of Veria, to the wastewater treatment plan in the city of Veria, which is located northeast of the city, approximately 900m east of the village Makrochori
2. The final design of the external water supply pipelines from the water spring of Mavroneri up to community of Agia Varvara, and from the pipeline junction of the water springs of Agkathi and Leontaria, up to community of Kato Vermio

The communities of Rachi, Agia Varvara, Ammos, Mesi, Georgianoi and Tripotamos, had rudimentary internal sewerage networks, the communities of Panorama and Lazochori had an integrated sewerage network, whereas the communities of Asomata and Komninos were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.
Furthermore the existing water supply pipelines in the communities of Agia Varvara and Kato Vermio, were constructed primarily of steel, which is a material with a potential risk of disease outbreaks to the health of the community residents.
The above table shows the total peak population of all communities for each design phase.
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines and the pumping stations was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
- Gravity sewer pipeline network (overall length: 8.890m and pipeline diameters of 200mm, 250mm and 400mm) and force main pipelines (total length: 18.390m and pipeline diameters of 90mm, 125mm, 200mm and 225mm). Seven (7) pumping stations were used for pumping the wastewater
- Water supply pipelines (total length: 16370m and pipeline diameters of 140mm, 180mm and 200mm), and force main pipeline (total length: 5.500m, and pipeline diameter of 200mm). One (1) pumping station was used for pumping the water
BENEFIT
The design of the forementioned works, solved the problem of sewage disposal for Municipal Districts of Rachi, Asomata, Agia Varvara, Ammos, Mesi, Georgiani, Tripotamos, Komninio, Panorama and Lazochori of the Municipality of Veria, and the problem of water supply network for the municipal districts of Agia Varvara and Kato Vermio.
