ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of a new water tank in the community of Koufonissia
SOLUTION
The community of Koufonissia was served by two (2) water tanks with capacities of 1.000m3 and 500m3. The tanks were unable to meet the increased water demand during the summer months.
The table below shows the total peak population for the community of Koufonisia, for each design phase.
Peak Population of Served Communities | |||
Community | Population 2001 | Population in Summer | Projected Population in 40 years |
Koufonisia | 366 | 2.500 | 3.000 |
TOTAL | 366 | 2.500 | 3.000 |
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the tank was based on a 40-year horizon.
Specifically, the final design included a covered rectangular water tank, with dimensions 20,50m x 20,50m x 3,00m (W x L x H) and wall thickness of 0,25 m, constructed of reinforced concrete in the location "Tank" (Ground Elevation = 46m) and adjacent to the existing water tanks which supply the community of Koufonisia. Moreover, a valve vault was included with dimensions 3,00m x 4,75m x 3,00m (W x L x H).
The capacity of the tank was 1.260m3.
The roof of the tank is supported by nine columns with dimensions 0.40m x 0.40m.
The new tank is connected in parallel with the other two existing tanks.
BENEFIT
The design of the new water supply tank, solved the problem of providing sufficient quantity of drinking water in the community of Koufonissia.
