WATER DISTRIBUTION NETWORK MODERNIZATION DESIGN OF MUNICIPALITY OF SIDIROKASTRO, SERRES PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Sidirokastro
Year: 2001
Budget: 5.055.000€ (2002 prices)
ISSUEThe purpose of the project was the

final design of the water distribution networks for the City of Sidirokastro. Specifically, the design included:
1. A new expanded distribution network which covered the entire city
2. Replacement of the existing pipelines with new 3rd generation polyethylene pipelines
SOLUTION
The City of Sidirokastro had water distribution networks which due to the age (50 years old) and the construction material (asbestos and steel pipelines) they could not ensure the adequacy and good quality of drinking water.
The table below shows the total peak population for the City of Sidirokastro, for each design phase.
Peak Population of served communities |
Community | Population 2001 | Projected Population in 20 years | Projected Population in 40 years |
Sidirokastro | 5.632 | 7.292 | 9.441 |
TOTAL | 5.632 | 7.292 | 9.441 |
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines was based on a 40-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
- internal water distribution network of the City of Sidirokastro, with an overall length of 55.000m and pipeline diameters from 90mm to 125mm
- external network of water supply pipes (total length: 2.100m and pipeline diameters of 125mm – 225mm).
BENEFIT
The modernization of the water distribution pipelines, solved the problem of supplying sufficient quantity and appropriate quality of drinking water, in the City of Sidirokastro.
