PRELIMINARY HYDRAULIC DESIGN OF A RESERVOIR IN THE REGION SOUTH OF MUNISIPAL DISTRICT OF LEFKONA
Client: Municipality of Lefkona
Year: 2000
Budget: 353.000€
ISSUE The purpose of the project was the preliminary design of the required works for the construction of a reservoir in the region south of Municipal District of Lefkona, aiming to:
- irrigation of the adjacent farmland
- artificial recharge of groundwater aquifiers
- environmental and aesthetic improvement of the region
- function as a regulator storage tank for the water coming from the sugar industrial facility (recycled – reclaimed water)
SOLUTION
The water needs were satisfied by water wells. However, many problems related to water adequacy and quantity and the aquifiers depletion demonstrate the need to find alternative solutions.
The construction of this project addressed these problems with an integrated water resources management approach, by utilizing the surface water runoff of the Lefkonas torrent.
The selected location for the construction of the reservoir is situated south of the Municipal District of Lefkonas, and inundates a properly formed area of 3 hectares with a capacity of 100.000m3. The reservoir fills either from the partial diversion of the Lefkonas torrent, or from the surplus of treated effluent water from the sugar industrial facility (420.000m3/year)
The preliminary design of the project included the following:
- access road
- earthen embankments
- coating of the bottom of the reservoir with fine or clayey material
- fencing
- perimetric drainage canal upstream of the reservoir towards the natural slopes
- spillways
- reservoir discharge valves and piping
- environmental upgrade of the surrounding area which includes the appropriate configuration of space with tables, chairs, benches, litter bins, viewpoints etc.
BENEFITThe design of the reservoir was implemented in light of integrated water resources management and contributes to satisfy the demand for irrigation water in the broader region of the Municipal District of Lefkonas.
