Project Summary

Drinking Water-Irrigation
IDENTIFICATION OF LOCATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN OF SMALL DAMS IN THE AREA OF NTRANOVA OF MUNICIPALITY OF EMMANUIL PAPA, SERRES PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Emmanuil Papa, Prefecture of Serres
Time: 1999
Budget: 1.912.000€

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was to Οικισμός Εμμ.Παππάidentify potential locations for the construction of small dams in the area of Ntranova of Municipality of Emmanuil Pappa in order to meet the irrigation needs of the broader region covering 300 hectares of tree crops, mainly olive and almond groves but also tobacco groves and vineyards. The projects designed in a conceptual level.

SOLUTION
The irrigation water needs were satisfied by water wells. However, many problems related to water efficiency and quality and aquifer depletion demonstrate the need to find alternative water resources.

The construction of the small dams addressed these problems with an integrated water resources management approach by utilizing the winter surface waters runoff of Kranorema, Makrilakos, Drosero, Kontino, and Ksero torrents which are close to Community of Agio Pnevma.

The project included the identification of the area and the study of the watersheds of the torrents crossing the broader region of the Municipality. After examining the morphological, geological and the hydrological characteristics of the area, the design team proposed a solution based on the economic feasibility of the project, in order to gather as much water as possible. Particular concern was given to the project in order to have the lowest possible intervention within the environment and to not disturbing the ecological chain.

Overall it was proposed a construction of three reservoirs, with the accompanying projects (water intake, reservoir embankment, spillway etc.) which are filled with surplus of winter runoffs from the torrents in the region. Their total reservoir capacity is 800.000m3.

Furthermore, it was proposed the installation of an irrigation network centrally controlled by computer, which included:
BENEFIT
The design of the small dams was implemented in light of integrated water resources management and solved the irrigation problem of the area of Dranova.
