EVALUATION OF THE EXISTING WATER AND WASTEWATER INFRASTRUCTURE AND ITS POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE MUNICIPALITY OF VISALTIA, SERRES PREFECTURE
Client: Municipality of Visaltia – Community of Dimitritsi
Year: 1999
Budget: 7.153.000€ (2002 prices)
ISSUE
The purpose of the
project was the recording of the existing water and wastewater infrastructure and the design of the required future infrastructure.
SOLUTION The Municipality’s communities had water distribution networks which due to the age and the construction material (asbestos and steel pipelines), they could not ensure the adequacy and good quality of drinking water.
Furthermore, the Municipality’s communities were served by septic tanks. The produced wastewater was discharged untreated in the broader region, resulting in the degradation of the natural environment and the quality of life for local residents.
The design of the project was pursuant to the Greek Presidential Decree 696/74. The design of the pipelines and the pumping stations was based on a 40-year horizon, while the selection of the electrical and mechanical equipment was based on a 20-year horizon. Specifically, the project included:
- replacement of the asbestos water distribution pipelines
- internal sewerage networks
- gravity sewer pipeline network (overall length: 15.100m and pipeline diameters 200mm - 400mm) and force main pipelines (total length: 7.200m and pipeline diameters 160mm - 200mm); three (3) pumping stations were used for pumping the wastewater
- wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), in which comprises primary treatment (screening, desanding, sand and grit removal, and primary sedimentation) and secondary treatment (aeration tank and secondary sedimention tank); the treated water effluent discharges into the Strymona river which flows through the Municipality of Visaltia
BENEFIT
The design of the forementioned works solved the problem of water supply and sewage disposal for the communities in the Municipality of Visaltia.
