The purpose of the project was the final design of the water supply pipeline from the dam Makrilakos to the water storage tank of community of Agio Pnevma. Furthermore, a new roadway was designed, with the new pipeline being placed along its route.

SOLUTION
The community of Agio Pnevma covered part of its water supply needs by water wells. However, many problems related to water adequacy and quantity as well as the depletion of aquifiers, demonstrate the need to find alternative solutions. A small water reservoir built in “Makrilakos”, 15km northeast of the community of Agio Pnevma. The roadway connecting the community and the reservoir is an old rural roadway which passes close to the ruins of the community of Dranova. Prior to reaching Dranova, there is an existing water distribution pipeline. From Dranova to the existing reservoir, a pipeline was necessary to be installed. For the construction of the pipeline, a new rural roadway was designed, which has easier access to the reservoir, because the current roadway through Dranova is longer and its geometrical characteristics have been altered due to aging.

The routing of the roadway, with a total length of 5+717,5km, starts from the exit of the water intake of the dam and follows a downward slope southwards to the point K96 at station 4+951 along the torrent’s route. From the point K96 to the end, the roadway has an upward slope prior to connecting with the existing road in the ruins of Dranova.

The roadway was designed according to Class C roadway requirements. The maximum longitudinal gradient is 8.3% and the lowest 1.27%. The roadway width is approximately 4m with some sections being wider, for the facilitation of cars in intersections. The excavation slopes range from 1:1 for the earthy - semirocky to 10:1 for the rocky sections of the roadway and the embankments slopes range from 2:3 for the earthy - semirocky to 2.5:3 for the rocky sections of the roadway.

The pipeline follows the roadway route from the dam towards the community on the right slope of the roadway. Hydraulic energy dissipater chambers were constructed along the pipeline at stations 1+062.50, 2+191.00 and 3+400.50. Moreover, a cleaning chamber was constructed at station 4+951.00. From that point to the end of the pipeline in the ruins of Dranova, the pipeline follows an upward route.

BENEFIT
The design of the pipeline and rural roadway solved the problems of water supply and road connection from dam “Makrilakos” to community of Agio Pnevma.
