ISSUE

The project designed in two phases:

Phase Α: «Estimation of the problems in Vistonida - Ismarida lakes water system due to the problem of sediment flow»

Phase Β: «Sediment flow management of lake Vistonida water system as well as rivers and torrents of the broader region»

SOLUTION

The main problem of lakes Vistonida - Ismarida water system, caused largely by anthropogenic interference is the high sediment flows that collect and remains in the lakes. The Phase A of the project concludes in the following:

 - continuous decrease of the morphological characteristics of lake Vistonida due to the increasing estuary aggradation from the rivers entering the lake; this problem mainly applies to the estuaries of rivers Kosynthos and Kompsatos

- continuous decrease of the morphological characteristics of lake Ismarida

Upon completion of Phase A it was proposed a program of organized sand extractions from rivers Kompsatos, Kosynthos and Vozvozis, as well as the construction of sediment flow retention works by constructing terraces along rivers Kompsatos and Kosynthos.

Of all the required works in Kompsatos river Phase B included the final design. Specifically it was designed the construction of three (3) terraces within river Kompsatos:

 

 

Furthermore, for maintaining safe flow conditions in the Kompsatos river at the construction site the formation works of the river bed was proposed which included mostly excavations and some embankments. Specifically, it was proposed in the construction site of:

BENEFIT

The current project investigated the temporal evolution of the sediment deposition problem in the water system of lakes Vistonida - Ismarida. The proposal of the necessary actions and the design of the project were conducted within the framework of environmental protection.
