FINAL DESIGN OF THE DAM GKOYLIAMARAGKA IN THE REGION OF MUNICIPALITY OF NIGRITA

ISSUE
The purpose of the project
was the final design of the required works for the construction of a dam. The project aims to ensure adequate water supply for the communities Nigrita and Terpni as well as the irrigation of crops in the broader region of Municipality of Nigrita (mainly greenhouses).
SOLUTION
Today the water supply for the communities and the farmers needs in the region is provided by waterwells. However, many problems related to the efficiency, the quality of water, and the depletion of aquifers demonstrate the need to find alternative water resources.
The construction of the proposed dam addressed these problems with an integrated water resources management approach by utilizing the surface waters runoff of Megalo Rema.
The dam which is situated near the river bed of Megalo Rema, has a reservoir volume of 400.000m3, and inundates an area of approximately 4 hectares. The final design of the project included the following:

- earth dam with a height of 26m, length of 320m, total volume of 200.000m3 and water height of 13m
- water intake and conveyance pipeline with a length of 1.465m
- overflow works
- water outlet
- access road of the Dam (3.700 m length of road)
- coating of the bottom of the reservoir with fine or clayey material and waterproofing membrane
- fencing of reservoir
- side canal
- control builiding
BENEFIT
The design of the dam Gkoyliamaragka was implemented with an integrated water resources management approach, and contributes and solved the problem of water supply and irrigation of the municipality Nigrita, Serres.
