ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the water resources management of Municipality of Nea Zichni, the determination of their capacity and their distribution in the water districts of the region in order to identify suitable sites for collection and storage of surface water (dams and lake reservoirs).
SOLUTION
The Municipality of Nea Zichni satisfied the drinking and irrigation water needs mainly from water wells. However, many problems related to the adequacy of water and the depletion of aquifers, demonstrate the need to find alternative solutions.
The project addressed these problems with an integrated water resources management approach by identifying suitable sites for collection and storage of surface water (dams and lake reservoirs).
The study included identification of the region and the river basins of the torrents belonging to the municipality. Following the examination of the morphological, geological and hydrological characteristics of the region, the existing condition was assessed in terms of the water presources potential of the river basins and projects were proposed for the environmental rehabilitation of the torrents of Municipality of Nea Zichni.
Below are shown the sites of the proposed environmental interventions:
- Community of Nea Zichni and especially the site near the torrent of Agia Paraskevi, with an area of 600 m²; in this site, a viewing point was proposed that included a gazebo, benches, stone walkways, lighting poles and wooden fence
- Municipal District of Agios Christoforos and especially in the area near the torrent, west of the community (church’s torrent); in this site, a recreation area was proposed, with mild construction works which included a wooden shading canopy, wooden benches, a network of shale-paved pathways, a fountain and plantings.; in the area where the church is located, it was proposed the formation of ornamental shrubs flower beds, a shale-paved courtyard area and placement of benches; furthermore, the expansion of the existing fence was proposed on the north side of the courtyard (next to the torrent), and finally the construction of a staiway on the west side
- Municipal District of Dimitra, near the municipal office; in this site a viewing point and a promenade area was proposed along the torrent with lighting poles and placement of a wooden fence along the entire length of the interventions; the proposed viewing point is located behind the existing football field and includes shading canopy, benches, stone pathways and plantings
- Municipal District of Mesorachi and especially in the second torrent which is encased and located west of the community; in this site a natural park was proposed that includes recreation and promenade areas and mild construction works such as wooden shading canopy, benches and playground on both sides of the stream; furthermore, it was proposed the construction of a wooden cafeteria with tile roof and a network of stone pathways and a wooden bridge with a width of 1.5m
- Municipal District of Tholos and especially along Tholorema torrent; in this site for a length of 800m, planting was proposed along with mild construction works such as benches, stone fountains, etc; also, the construction of a walkway alongside the torrent was proposed
- Municipal District of Mirrini and especially in the community’s square; in this site it was proposed the reconstruction of the playground and the basketball court and placement of plantings, benches, cafeterias, etc
- Region of Palia Zichni between Anastasia and Nea Zichni, nearby Megas Lakos torrent; in the site it was proposed construction of a network of pathways and a cafeteria and placement of tables and chairs, stone fountains, etc
BENEFIT
The study was implemented in light of an integrated water resources management approach and contributed to the environmental and aesthetic improvement of the area.
