ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE EXPANSION OF THE SANITARY LANDFILL FOR MUNICIPALITY OF LAMIA, PREFECTURE OF FTHIOTIDA

The purpose of the project was the Environmental Permit for the expansion of the sanitary landfill of Municipality of Lamia that included a new refuse cell, bed lining works, minimization and treatment of the produced leachate and biogas and support facilities (e.g. waste water treatment plant, flood protection, stormwater tank, fencing, access roads, etc)

SOLUTION
The construction site is a complementary area to the existing solid waste disposal site.

The new refuse cell was designed to accept municipal solid waste from the Municipalities of Lamia, Pelasgia, Echinaies, Stylida, Leianokladi, Ypati, Gorgopotamos, Molos and the Community of Pavliani for 5 additional years. The total annual served population is 99.500 residents.

Specifically, the project included:

• new refuse cell that has a capacity of 242.660m³ and comprises:
• slope and bed formation works
• slope and bed lining works
• new leachate management works that include:
• leachate collection network located on the bed of the cell
• leachate treatment unit using the artificial wetland method
• new biogas management works that include:
• vertical network for pumping biogas
• horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance
• biogas pumping and flare unit
• additional flood management works (surrounding stormwater channels for the new cell)
• required mechanical and electrical equipment (e.g. pump stations, electrical equipment for the control building of the leachate treatment unit, perimetric lighting, etc)
• additional infrastructure works that include:
• repair of the existing fencing
• perimetric road
• tire washing station
• building for power generator
• additional environmental monitoring measures (sedimentation witnesses, groundwater monitoring wells, biogas controlling wells)

The project identified all the exact deposit locations. In addition, the existing natural and human environmental condition was investigated. Further, information on the feasibility of the project was given, followed by a detailed technical description of the project.

Finally, the extent and magnitude of the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the project as well as the mitigation of the environmental impacts were described and alternative solutions were examined.

BENEFIT
The project was submitted to the responsible environmental public authority for the approval of the Environmental Permit.
