SANITARY LANDFILL DESIGN - SITE IDENTIFICATION FOR MUNICIPALITY OF SERRES, PREFECTURE OF SERRES

ISSUE 
The purpose of the project was the development of a rational solid waste management system for Municipalities of Serres, Lefkona and for Communities of Ano Vrodou and Oreini – with a total population of 85.000, in order to protect the environment and public health, and particularly included:
- the identification of sites in the broader region of Municipality of Serres and Lefkoma and communities of Ano Vrodou and Oreinou, that are tentatively suitable for sanitary landfilling
- the evaluation and ranking of the obtained sites in order to finally propose the most suitable place
- the development of a Management Plan for recyclable materials
SOLUTION
The project included:
- recording of the environment of the broader region
- presentation and evaluation of the three sites chosen as tentatively suitable for waste disposal. These sites were:
- Position 1 (selected location), located in the 9th km of the provincial road connecting Serres and Ksirotopos, 4km northwest of Metochi, covering an area of 16.1 hectares. This position is expected to cover the needs of waste disposal for a period of 21 years.
- Position 2, located 700m southwest of Ksirotopos, 1.5km northeast of Lefkona, covering an area of 15 hectares. This position is expected to cover the needs of waste disposal for a period of 19 years.
- Position 3, located 3.5km north of Community of Metochi, covering an area of 13 hectares. This position is expected to cover the needs of waste disposal for a period of 17 years.
- detailed presentation of the criteria taken into account for the comparative evaluation of the selected sites
- description of the proposed sanitary landfilling method and the supporting projects
- description of the method and the supporting projects for the Recycled Materials Center
- presentation of financial and pricing policy issues as well as the management bodies
BENEFIT
The design of the project essentially solved the problem of solid waste management for Municipalities of Serres, Lefkona and Communities of Ano Vrodou and Oreini.
