SANITARY LANDFILL STUDY - PREAPPROVED PROJECT LOCATION SITE FOR MUNICIPALITY OF SERRES, PREFECTURE OF SERRES

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the study for the Preapproved Location Site for the sanitary landfill and its supplementary works, that serves the needs of safe disposal of solid waste for Municipalities of Serres, Lefkona and Communities of Ano Vrodou and Oreini. In addition, a Recycling Center is constructed within the limits of the sanitary landfill.

SOLUTION
The project is situated in the 9th km of the provincial road connecting Serres and Ksirotopos, 4km northwest of Metochi, covering an area of 16.1 hectares. The total served population reaches 85.900 residents annually.

Specifically the project included:

• construction and formation of a new refuse cell with:
• slope and bed formation works
• slope and bed lining works
• new leachate management works that include:
• leachate collection network located on the bed of the cell
• leachate treatment unit
• new biogas management works that include:
• vertical network for pumping biogas
• horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance
• supply and installation of a biogas Pumping and Combustion Unit
• additional flood management works (e.g. surrounding stormwater channels)
• required mechanical and electrical equipment (e.g. pump stations, electrical equipment for the control building of the leachate treatment unit, perimetric lighting etc)
• construction – installation of additional infrastructure in place (entrance, outpost entry, weighbridge, tire washing station, management building, fire belt, engine room, perimetric planting etc)
• implementation of environmental monitoring measures to control sedimentation by installing witnesses, and opening of wells for monitoring groundwater and biogas
• construction of a Recycling Center in a building with an area of 1.250m², which includes a processing capacity line of 3tn/h. The construction field for the building covers an area of 0.4 hectares

The project identified all the exact deposit locations. In addition, the existing natural and human environmental condition was investigated. Further, information on the feasibility of the project was given, followed by a detailed technical description of the project.

Finally, the extent and magnitude of the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the project as well as the mitigation of the environmental impacts were described and alternative solutions were examined.

BENEFIT
The project submitted in the responsible environmental public agency. With the proposed projects, a solution is provided to the problem of solid waste disposal for Municipality of Serres.
