ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the preliminary design and the preparation of bid documents of the required works for the restoration of the existing refuse disposal site of Municipality of Nigrita, located 6km east of the city of Nigrita.
SOLUTION Municipality of Nigrita
The long-term operation of the refuse disposal site with minimum environmental protection measures, imposes an integrated and direct approach to improve the existing condition.
The project includes all the required rehabilitation works of the existing RDS and the construction of a supplementary sanitary landfill.
Specifically, the project includes the works relating to the collection of solid waste from the region around the torrent Mega Rema and its disposal to the supplementary disposal site according to the sanitary landfill specifications. Further, the project includes the restoration of the ground surface with horticultural works.
Analytically the project included:
- construction of a new waste disposal cell with:
- slope and bed formation works for the new cell
- slope and bed lining works for the new cell
- construction of leachate management works
- construction of biogas management works of the existing and new cell with:
- vertical network for pumping biogas
- horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance
- construction – installation of additional infrastructure in the area, including:
- repair – construction of new fence sections
- fire belt and perimetric roadway
- implementation of additional necessary environmental monitoring measures (sedimentation witnesses, groundwater and biogas monitoring wells
BENEFIT
The design of the project solved the problem of polluting the natural environment from the long-term operation of the RDS of Municipality of Nigrita.
