ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE RESTORATION DESIGN OF THE REFUSE DISPOSAL SITE OF MUNICIPALITY OF NIGRITA, PREFECTURE OF SERRES

The purpose of the project was the Environmental Impact Assessment for the phase of approval of the Environmental Permit for the construction of the required works for the restoration of the existing RDS of Municipality of Nigrita, located 6km east of the city of Nigrita.

SOLUTION                                                                    
The project includes all the required rehabilitation works of the existing RDS and the construction of a supplementary sanitary landfill.

Specifically, the project includes the works relating to the collection of solid waste from the region around the torrent Mega Rema and its disposal to the supplementary disposal site according to the sanitary landfill specifications. Further, the project includes the restoration of the ground surface with horticultural works.

Analytically the project included:

• construction of a new waste disposal cell with:
• slope and bed formation works for the new cell
• slope and bed lining works for the new cell
• construction of leachate management works
• construction of biogas management works of the existing and new cell with:
• vertical network for pumping biogas
• horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance
• construction – installation of additional infrastructure in the area, including:
• repair – construction of new fence sections
• fire belt and perimetric roadway
• implementation of additional necessary environmental monitoring measures (sedimentation witnesses, groundwater and biogas monitoring wells

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact for the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigation actions during the construction and operation phases were provided. In addition, the alternative solutions for the construction of the works were examined.

BENEFIT
The project study was submitted to the responsible environmental public authority for the approval of the Environmental Permit and contributed to the restoration of the existing RDS of Municipality of Nigrita.
