Solid Waste Management
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE PROJECT: " SANITARY LANDFILL AND COMPOSTING FACILITY OF SERRES PREFECTURE "

Client: Solid Waste Management Enterprise of Serres
Year: 1997

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the approval of the environmental terms of the project for the construction of a new sanitary landfill and a composting facility for the organic fraction of waste (twigs, leaves, shrubs etc.) in prefecture of Serres along with the support facilities (sentry box, entrance of the sanitary landfill, administration building, machine station, fencing, perimetric planting of trees etc).

SOLUTION            Δ.Σ.Α                                                           View of the sanitary landfill area

The study area is located in the central-western part of the Prefecture of Serres next to the Thessaloniki-Serres-Promaxonas Roadway. The proposed location for the new landfill lies between Zeuvgolatio and Strimonikos communities at a distance of 2 km from each community. The total surface area is estimated about 500 hectares.

The final design of the proposed works has been completed and comprises an integrated waste treatment management program for collection-transport and disposal of waste for the entire prefecture.

The final design includes the following works:
• Construction of sanitary landfill including all the required works, buildings and supply of mechanical equipment
• Construction of fourteen (14) waste transfer stations in selected areas in Prefecture of Serres, including the supply of the necessary mechanical equipment
• Construction of a roadway to connect the sanitary landfill and the fourteen (14) waste transfer stations with the existing roadway network

Next, a brief description is made for the landfill and the support facilities:

• Landfill exit-entrance
• Tyre washing station for refuse trucks
• Office-weighting station for refuse trucks
• Administration building
• Refuse cells
• Composting facility
• Secondary waste sorting facility
• Warehouse for storage and maintenance of vehicles-machineries
• Surrounding stormwater channels
• Perimetric tree planting and fencing
• Access roadways

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT

The design of the project contributed to the maturation of the actions for the wastewater management in Prefecture of Serres.
