Project Summary

Solid Waste Management
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE DESIGN OF A SANITARY LANDFILL IN THE COMMUNITY OF KOUFONISIA, PREFECTURE OF SOUTH CYCLADES

Client: Prefecture of South Cyclades-Community of Koufonisia
Year: 1997

ISSUE

The purpose of the study was the environmental impact assessment for the approval of environmental terms for the new sanitary landfill in community of Koufonisia.

SOLUTIONΔ.Σ.Α

The study area is located in the position “Kapsalia” in the northern edge of the island and has a surface area of 40 hectares.

The uncontrollable solid waste disposal resulted in the environmental deterioration of the broader region.

The new landfill cell was designed to provide solid waste disposal for the next 12 years. The total landfill area serves 2.400 inhabitans.

More specifically, the projects included:
• Construction and formation of a new refuse cell of a total area of 5 hectares:
- slope and bed formation works
- slope and bed lining works
• New leachate management works which included:
- leachate collection network located on the bed of the cell
- leachate treatment unit which comprises aerobic and anaerobic treatment with leachate recirculation through waste deposit by spraying
• New biogas management works which include:
- vertical network for pumping biogas
- horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance
- supply and installation of a biogas pumping and flare unit
• Additional flood management works (e.g. surrounding stormwater channels)
• The construction – installation of additional infrastructure which included:
- fencing
- perimetric planting
- perimetric roadway and fire protection zone
• Implementation of additional environmental monitoring measures for the new landfill cell (sedimentation witnesses and wells for monitoring groundwater and biogas)

In the current study, the exact locations for the construction of the works were identified and the existing condition of the natural and human environment was examined. Additionally, the feasibility of the works was demonstrated and a technical description of the works was performed.

Finally, the environmental impact from the construction and operation of the works was described and the mitigating actions during the construction and operation phases were provided.

BENEFIT

The project was submitted to the responsible public authority for the Approval of Environmental Permit of the suggested works and will solve the problem of municipal solid waste disposal of the Community of Koufonisia.
