ISSUE
The purpose of the study was the design of the required works for the construction of a complementary sanitary landfill area in the city of Serres.

The existing refuse dump, after a long period of operation, has reached its capacity limits.
The selection of the location for the construction of the sanitary landfill required information about the characteristics of the landfill area, climatic and hydrologic data to be taken into account.
The new refuse cell will be constructed at the north-east side of the existing refuse dump and will accept solid waste from the city of Serres for sanitary landfilling. The design of the landfill was based upon current technical specifications which ensure the environmentally acceptable method of sanitary landfilling.
Specifically, the construction of the sanitary landfill included:
• New refuse cell with:
- four terraces from where the first terrace begins at the boundaries of the existing refuse dump and the last terrace reaches the existing roadway
- slope and bed lining works using geomembrane
• New leachate management works using a pipe network with diameter 150mm and 200mm
• Vertical well network for collecting biogas
• Restoration works, namely:
- formation of finished grade
- fencing and planting of trees
- perimetric roadway and lighting poles
BENEFIT
The new sanitary landfill solved the problem of solid waste disposal of city of Serres until the construction of the new sanitary landfill of Municipality of Serres.
