SOLID WASTE AND WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR DISTRICT OF SOUTH AEGEAN (A', B' & C' PHASE)
Client: Region of South Aegean
Year: 2001
ISSUEThe purpose of the project was the recording of the existing condition as well as the determination of the priorities of the immediate needs, based on the strategic directions of European Union and Greek legislation in the wastewater management sector

for th e region of South Aegean and especially the Prefecture of Cyclades.
SOLUTION The project was implemented in 2 phases:
- Phase A - Commentary on current condition:
- recording and description of the current operational, technical and economic condiition of the infrastructure in the wastewater management sector
- Phase B - Formation of a supportive framework of actions for wastewater management:
- presentation and commentary of current technology systems for collection, transmission and treatment of wastewater
- proposals for the improvement of the operation and design of the wastewater infrastructure
- proposals for the required projects in each area
- presentation of project maturity in terms of design
During Phase A, a full recording, description and commentary of the existing condition in the wastewater management of Region of South Aegean was performed, which included the recording and evaluation of a set of quantitative and qualitative parameters that assisted in the assessment of the existing condition. First, the general characteristics of the Prefecture were recorded, i.e. environmental, geological, hydrogeological, economic activities, etc, as well as the communities of the Municipalities within the Region by estimating the permanent and seasonal residents which assisted in the calculation of the hydraulic load.
Next, a full inventory of the existing projects in the islands of the Region was made and conclusions were drawn for:
the general profile of solid waste in the Region
the current practice of solid waste management
the financial management data
the preparation of the required works
Finally, the existing condition of the solid waste management projects was discussed.
In Phase B, the project team developed a comprehensive solid waste management plan for the Region. Specifically, at island level, a proposed plan for managing solid waste was presented in detail, which included a detailed presentation and comparison of potential sites for the construction of:
- solid waste management facilities
- inert waste management facilities
- vehicle waste management facilities
- waste management facilities for electrical and electronic equipment and used batteries
- wastewater treatment plant sludge management facilities
- agricultural and livestock waste management facilities
The aforementioned projects were prioritized based upon a multi-criteria system. Finally, potential operators for the management of the required projects were proposed.
BENEFIT
The wastewater masterplan proved to be a useful tool in the Region of South Aegean for the wastewater and solid waste management within its administrative limits.
