SANITARY LANDFILL EXPANSION OF MINICIPALITY OF SERRES

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the
preliminary design of the existing landfill expansion of Municipality of Serres along with a number of required works for extending the life span of the landfill for approximately 6 years until the new sanitary landfill will be constructed for the entire Prefecture of Serres. The design population for the Municipality of Serres was 77.000 inhabitants.

The expansion works of the existing sanitary landfill included:

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the
preliminary design of the existing landfill expansion of Municipality of Serres along with a number of required works for extending the life span of the landfill for approximately 6 years until the new sanitary landfill will be constructed for the entire Prefecture of Serres. The design population for the Municipality of Serres was 77.000 inhabitants.SOLUTION
The expansion works of the existing sanitary landfill included:
- new refuse cell that occupies a total land area of 2.65 hectares, has a capacity of 290.000m3 and includes:
- slope and bed formation works
- slope and bed lining works
- new leachate management works that include:
- leachate collection network located on the bed of the cell with an overall length of 550m and pipeline diameters 225mm - 400mm
- leachate treatment unit that comprises anaerobic pretreatment followed by two (2) aerobic tanks, membrane reactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis unit for tertiary treatment
- new biogas management works that include:
- vertical network for pumping biogas from 33 wells
- horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance with a total length of 1.600m and pipeline diameters of 110mm and 250mm
- biogas pumping and flare unit with a capacity of 250m3/h
- additional flood management works (e.g. surrounding stormwater channels)
- required mechanical and electrical equipment (e.g. pump stations, electrical equipment for the control building of the leachate treatment unit, etc)
- additional infrastructure works that include:
- entrance gate with a total length of 5m
- sentry box and weighting station for refuse trucks with an area of 20m2
- waiting station for refuse trucks
- sampling station for refuse trucks
- tyre washing for refuse trucks
- existing roadway paving and addition of new roadway with an overall length of 630m
- new fencing with a total lenght of 2.550m
- fire protection zone surrounding the sanitary landfill
- additional environmental monitoring measures (settlement monitoring wells:18, groundwater monitoring wells: 2, biogas controlling wells: 9).
BENEFIT
The expansion of the existing sanitary landfill solved the problem of solid waste disposal of the Municipality of Serres for the next six (6) years.
