Client: Intermunicipal Solid Waste Utility of Kassandra-Pallini
Year: 2008
Budget: 11.540.000€
ISSUEThe purpose of

the study was the issuance of the environmental permit and the final design of the:
i. sanitary landfill expansion of Municipality of Kassandra that included a new refuse cell, bed lining works, minimization and treatment of the produced leachate and biogas and the upgrade - expansion of the existing support facilities (e.g. leachate treatment unit, etc)
ii. restoration of the existing refuse cells and the required support works (leachate and biogas collection systems)
SOLUTION
The existing sanitary landfill operates since 1993 and has currently reached its capacity limits.
The new refuse cell was designed to accept muhicipal solid waste from the Municipalities of Kassandra and Pallini for 9 additional years. The total annual served population is 144.500 residents.
Specifically, the project included:
- new refuse cell that occupies a total area of 1,35 hectares, has a capacity of 251.500m3 and comprises:
- slope and bed formation works
- slope and bed lininig works
- new leachate management works that include:
- leachate collection network located on the bed of the cell with an overall length of 1.400m and pipeline diameters of 200mm and 315mm
- leachate treatment unit that comprises anaerobic pretreatment followed by tow (2) aerobic tanks, membrane reactor (MBR) and reverse osmosis unit for tertiary treatment
- new biogas management works that include:
- vertical network for pumping biogas from 46 wells
- horizontal pipeline network for biogas conveyance with an overall length of 1.400m and pipeline diametes of 200mm and 315mm
- biogas pumping and flare unit with a capacity of 450m3/h.
- additional flood management works (surrounding stormwater channels for the new cell and the existing sanitary landfill)
- required mechanical and electrical equipment (e.g. pump stations, electrical equipment for the control building of the leachate treatment unit, etc)
- additional infrastructure works that include:
- repair of the existing fencing and new fencing with a total length of 1.400m
- fire protection zone and new access road with a length of 560m and paving of the existing access road to the landfill with a length of 870m
- additional environmental monitoring measures (settlement monitoring wells: 33, groundwater monitoring wells: 4, biogas controlling wells: 27).
BENEFIT
The expansion of the existing sanitary landfill solved the problem of municipal solid waste disposal of the Municipality of Kassandra for the next 9 years.
