RECEPTION BED WITH A VOLUME OF 50.000M³ FOR DRIED AND CALCIFICATED SLUDGE FOR THE LANDFILL SITE OF TAGARADES THESSALONIKI

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the
final design of the beds for the deposition of produced sludge from the Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in “Galliko”, for safe temporary storage of the inert and calcificated sludge, until the construction of Sludge Thermal Treatment Plant.
SOLUTION
The produced sludge of the WWTP in “Galliko” – about 135tn/day – accumulates within the WWTP creating health problems (the sludge content is infectious) for workers on the site and residents of the broader region, as well as problems for the natural environment.
The proposed area for the construction of the bed is adjacent to the existing WWTP in Galliko, in a space within the boundaries of the WWTP.
The total capacity of the bed - taking into account the final grade work after the required earthworks, the slopes and the surface quality - is estimated at 50.000m³.

Concisely, the design of the project includes the following:
- five beds with active depth of 3.2m – the total depth is 4.50m, namely 2.50m is the excavation and 2m is the embankment – and a storage capacity of 50.000m³. The sub - works included:
- earthworks (excavations for the construction of the bed, covering an area of 4 hectares, with excavation depth of 2.5m, average embankment depth of 2.0m for the construction of the reception bed, etc)
- sealing of beds
- pipeline network with diameters of 160mm and 200mm with a length of 821.68m and 298 respectively within the beds for the collection of leachate in a proposed junction chamber within the beds
- leachate transporting u-PVC pipelines with diameter of 315mm and length of 268.16m for transporting the leachate from the junction chambers of each bed to the final leachate collection chamber
- four (4) intermediate chambers for transporting the leachate from the junction chambers from each bed to the final leachate collection chamber
- one (1) final leachate collection chamber
- access roads (internal roadway network) at the perimeter of the bed with width of 5m and total length of 1.164m
- maintenance of existing fencing with a length of 50m
- monitoring of settlement with the installation of witnesses
The leachate is transported through gravity pipelines with a diameter of 315mm to the proposed final wastewater collection chamber, and through a pipeline – which was not part of the present project – is transported to an existing chamber prior to reaching the WWTP.
