SANITARY LANDFILL FINAL DESIGN FOR 2ND MANAGEMENT UTILITY OF MUNICIPALITY OF CHALKIDIKI

ISSUE
The purpose of the project
was the implementation design of the new landfill site construction of Chalkidiki’s second Management Module, for the environmentally safe waste disposal for communities:
- Vavdos, Galarino, Galatisa and Doubia of Municipality of Anthemounta
- Lakoma, Nea Gonia, Nea Silata of Municipality of Kalikratia
- Agios Mamantos, Agios Panteleimonas, Dionisios, Zografou, Nea Potidea, Portaria, Simantra, Flogita of Municipality of Moudania
- Eleochori, Krini, Nea Tenedos, Nea Triglia, Nees Plagies, Petralona, Pithari of Municipality of Triglia
The aforementioned design bade for the open contract for the selection of a contractor to build the project.
SOLUTION
The produced solid waste of communities was discharged untreated either in waste dumps, or in ravines and parcels resulting in the degradation of the natural environment.
The landfill site is located within the precinct of Galatista community of Municipality of Anthemounta and particularly in the broader region of Prinochori community, 1.1km northeast of it. The project area is located just at the southeastern edge of the hills known by the name of “Sikies”. The site consists of two cells whereas the first one occupies a total area of 4.5 hectares with a capacity of 496.000m3, and the second one occupies an area of 6.5 hectares with a capacity of 604.000m3. The design had to be sufficient for the waste disposal of the aforementioned communities for a period of 20 years. The total served population is 32.000 residents per year
More specifically the project included:
- Management and development works that include:
- detection and site configuration for waste deposition
- construction of retaining waste embankments
- stormwater management works
- road construction works (internal and temporary routes)

- construction of a natural geological barrier
- construction of an artificial geological barrier
- leachate collection, treatment and disposal works:
- collection network, with an overall length of 1.850m and pipeline diameters of 180mm and 315mm
- extraction and transmission system to the leachate treatment unit
- treatment works
- recirculation system
- Biogas collection, transmission and management works:
- collection network, with an overall length of 340m and pipeline diameters of 110mm and 225mm
- vertical transmission system
- burning torch with a capacity of 600m3/h
- Monitoring system:
- leachate escape monitoring system with samples from the internal drainage ditch
- monitoring system of groundwater and surface water’s quality, through two boreholes
- monitoring biogas system through 32 boreholes
- monitoring subsidence system through 20 witnesses

BENEFIT
The project investigated the optimal solution in order to solve the problem of solid waste landfilling for a large number of communities for the next 20 years.
