SANITARY LANDFILL FINAL DESIGN FOR 3RD MANAGEMENT UTILITY OF OF PREFECTURE OF HALKIDIKI

ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the new sanitary landfill for 2nd of Chalkidiki Management Utility, in order to provide environmentally safe solid waste disposal for the communities below:
- Geroplatanos, Krimni, Marathousa, Palaiohora, Riza within Zevrehoria Municipality.
- Poligiros, Ag.Prodromos, Vrastama, Olinthos, Paliokastro, Sana, Taxiarhis within Poligiros Municipality.
The aforementioned design was submitted with the design-built procedure for the selection of the contractor. 
SOLUTION
The produced solid waste was discharged untreated either in waste dumps or in ravines and parcels resulting in the degradation of the natural environment.
The proposed sanitary landfill will be constructed in the vicinity of community of Kastri, northwest of Poligiros and at a distance of 4km. The site occupies 9 hectares, while the effective deposit area is 2.65 hectares. Moreover it is noted that the sanitary landfill consists of a single deposit cell with a capacity 266.000m3. The total served population is estimated to be 13.200 residents per year.
More specifically the project included:
- Management and development works that include:
- detection and site configuration for refuse deposition
- construction of embankments for retaining refuse
- stormwater management works
- roadway construction works (internal and temporary routes)
- Sealing works:
- construction of a natural geological barrier
- construction of an artificial geological barrier
- Leachate collection, treatment and disposal works:
- collection network, with an overall length of 1.850m and pipeline diameters of 180mm and 315mm
- collection and transmission system to the leachate treatment unit
- treatment works
- recirculation system
- Biogas collection, transmission and management works:
- collection network, with an overall length of 340m and pipeline diameters of 110mm and 225mm
- vertical transmission system
- flare unit with a capacity of 600m3/h
- Monitoring system:
- leachate samples from the internal stormwater drainage ditch
- monitoring groundwater and surface water quality wells (2)
- monitoring biogas wells (32)
- monitoring settlement witnesses (20)
- Infrastructure works:

BENEFIT
The project investigated the optimal solution in solving the problem of solid waste sanitary landfilling for a large number of communities in Chalkidiki for the next 20 years.
