ISSUE
The purpose of the project was the final design of the required works for the restoration of the uncontrollable refuse disposal site (URDS) of Municipality of Koropi.

SOLUTION
The long-term operation of the URDS with minimum protection measures for the natural environment requires an integrated and direct response to the current situation.

The URDS is located 3.5km northwest of community of Koropi, in the location Kastron Christos. The total area of the site is 1.7 hectares. The total deposits volume was 120.000 m3 while their quantity was 70.000tn.

For the restoration of the site, the refuse of the last five (5) years were placed at the sanitary landfill of Liossia, which is located at Ano Liosia serving most of Attica, while the remaining inert refuse were placed to Zoitsa or Markopoulos quary.

After the removal of the refuse, the revealed terrain was reintegrated into the natural environment and without causing a visual disturbance of the natural landscape.
   
Along with the removal of waste, an excavation and removal of polluted soil layer with a thickness of 50cm took place. The final surface was covered with soil material suitable for planting to avoid erosion problems. The cover thickness of the layer was 50m.

BENEFIT
The design of the project solved the problem of pollution of natural environment from the long-term operation of the URDS of Municipality of Koropi.
